E-Scooter Safety Tips to Avoid Injuries This Summer
Many people are turning to electric scooters, also known as e-scooters, as a popular mode of transportation and a fun way to explore the outdoors. Here are a few safety tips to help you enjoy a safe and pleasant riding experience this summer, and avoid a personal injury accident.
Wear Protective Gear
Before hopping onto an e-scooter, always remember to wear appropriate protective gear. A helmet is an absolute must to prevent severe injuries to your head in case of a fall or accident. Additionally, knee and elbow pads, as well as sturdy shoes, can help protect your limbs and feet.
Inspect Your E-Scooter
Before every ride, take a moment to inspect your e-scooter for any signs of damage or malfunction. Check the tires for proper inflation and good tread, test the brakes, and examine the lights and signals to ensure they are functional. A quick inspection can prevent accidents caused by equipment failure and keep you safe throughout your ride.
Be Mindful of Your Surroundings
When riding, it is crucial to pay attention to your surroundings and be aware of the traffic and pedestrians around you. Always follow traffic rules and signals, and yield to pedestrians when necessary. Avoid distractions like using your phone or listening to music with headphones, as they can hinder your ability to hear approaching vehicles or other potential hazards.
Start Slow and Practice
If you are new to riding e-scooters, start at a slow and comfortable pace until you feel confident in your abilities. Take some time to practice in a safe area with minimal traffic to get used to the controls and handling. Gradually increase your speed and navigate through more challenging terrains.
Maintain a Safe Speed
Speeding can lead to loss of control and increase the risk of accidents. Adjust your speed according to the surrounding environment, such as busy streets, crowded areas, or uneven surfaces.
Be Mindful of the Heat
Riding an e-scooter in hot weather requires additional considerations to ensure your safety and comfort. Drink water regularly to prevent dehydration during your ride, wear lightweight and breathable clothing, and apply sunscreen. Also, try to schedule your rides during the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning and late evening. Riding in extreme heat can lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke. If you start to feel overheated or fatigued, find a shaded area to take a break.
Familiarize Yourself with Local Laws and Regulations
Currently, e-scooters are not allowed in Philadelphia and other areas of Pennsylvania. Make sure to familiarize yourself with the laws applicable to the city where you wish to ride to help you avoid unnecessary fines or legal trouble. Pennsylvania considers e-scooters to be “motor-driven cycles,” which are subject to several regulations similar to motorcycles. Meaning e-scooters must be titled and registered and pass inspection. For instance, motorcycles must have turn signals, lights, fenders, and other equipment to be deemed road-safe. As a result, e-scooters would fail. However, there is a push being made to legalize their use.
